If I ever get one, I'll get two (or three), Jack. All the other promos in my little collection are factory folded into quarters, ain't that too bad? I guess that's they way they need to ship to the record stores.

I have a few posters with the same kinds of folds: cut yourself a switch, Springtime, and end time. I just emailed Thrill Jockey using my CIA credentials to see if I can get one of these new ones and anything else they might have - told them I need it for class purposes. We'll see what happens. Also, a few weeks ago I won an auction on Ebay for a completely new, still shrink-wrapped, vinyl copy of Freakwater's first album. It arrived today and it's so gorgeous I can't decide whether to open it and play it or just admire it as an object! And Thinking of You... just continues to get better and better. I can't stop playing it and anything else I've tried just isn't working, you know? All I can think is, "I've got to go hit the button and make T.O.Y.... play." And then I do. What a masterpiece. That's really all I can say and think and feel. What a fucking masterpiece. I still can't pick a favorite song, but "Cathy Ann" just melts me right down every single time, and more and more so, at that. This album is just an amazing piece of work. I've consistently found myself saying things like "Jesus Christ" or "wow" or "whoa" OUT LOUD TO NOBODY after each cut. I'm glad I've lived long enough to hear this. It's a gift to the world.

Jack

AND THEN, LO AND BEHOLD:

Today the UPS man delivered our 4 Catherine Irwin paintings we bought at her July show.

What a day.

Now I'm thinking there's still half the day left, but whatever could top this?

Happiness runs,
Jack the Knife

yes, dammit, it's folded into quarters, but I'm just looking at that as a plus. I have to do that kind of thing these days or I'd be in a strait-jacket - hey, remember that old song, "They're coming to take me away, ha ha, to the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time..." or something like that.

The paintings are really amazing to own. You know, anyone who wants one should just contact the gallery - they're only $100 each (and ALL the money goes to Catherine, the gallery takes no commission). I can't describe what it's like looking at them - it's just an amazing experience if you're a Catherine fan. Right there, you can touch them - they convey the same kind of intensity of emotion as her songs, but they're physical. She actually applied the paint with her own hands! (Well, and brushes). And they're signed on the back and everything. Even as much as I love Catherine, I didn't realize how cool it would be to own these, and I fucking teach ART. Just to look at one of them changes the day for me.

And I don't mean $100 is nothing - we are fairly poor, live from check to check - but for a piece of art by Catherine Irwin it IS nothing. Hell I could probably sell these to some Freakwater fanatic on Ebay for 10 times that - NOT THAT I EVER WOULD, EVER! - in fact, we were going to give one to a friend (another FW devotee) but I just can't even part with one of them. And like I said, she was so sweet about it - we bought 3 and as we were debating if we could live for the next month if we bought a 4th, she just gave it to us. PLEASE BELIEVE ME - if you're a big fan of Catherine's owning one of her paintings will enrich your life every single day. I know that from owning other art - but these, man...she knows exactly when to stop and she's fearless - mostly she has an amazing sense of color. And to answer your query, so far they go wherever I go.

love,
Jack the Knife

PS Dragging Wonder Lake is beautiful.
